The Peter Clifford MSc in Statistical Science
In March 2026, College launched an appeal to establish a new MSc in Statistical Science in memory of Peter Clifford, Fellow and Tutor in Mathematics at Jesus from 1976 – 2010.
Thanks to the generosity of alumni, friends and former colleagues, £40,000 needed to fully fund the studentship was raised within a few months. This will allow Jesus to welcome its first Peter Clifford MSc student in 2027, with both fees and maintenance covered.
Peter was a widely admired statistician, researcher and teacher whose work drew on ideas from mathematics, chemistry, physics and computer science. During the appeal, many former students and colleagues shared warm memories of his intellect, generosity and influence as a tutor, showing just how strongly his legacy continues to be felt.
The studentship will support a talented graduate undertaking the MSc in Statistical Science, providing advanced training in applied and computational statistics, statistical machine learning and the principles of statistical inference.
At a time when statistical thinking is increasingly important across research and society, this support will give an exceptional student the opportunity to develop their skills in a rigorous and fast-moving field
We are sincerely grateful to everyone who supported the appeal. Your generosity has created a lasting tribute to Peter while opening the door for a future statistician to continue their studies at Jesus regardless of financial background.
