The Bradley Wilson Oxford-Jesus Scholarship in Geography and the Environment

In February 2026, the College announced renewed support, in partnership with the School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE), for a new co-funded Geography DPhil Studentship for UK residents from Black and other minority ethnic backgrounds.

Together with Bradley Wilson (1967, Geography), who independently funded a third of the DPhil and after whom the Studentship is partly named, 77% of the initial funding was secured. Thanks to the generosity of our alumni, the remaining £35,000 was then raised, allowing us to fully fund a student of outstanding academic potential from an underrepresented background.

The Studentship will cover three years of University tuition fees, alongside a maintenance allowance and a generous research allowance.

This is the second iteration of the Studentship. Its first recipient, Zac Gunaratnam-Bailey, joined Jesus in 2023. In this video, Zac shares why this support has meant so much to him and the real-world value of supporting students reading Geography.

Thanks to the support of our alumni, we can now welcome a second exceptional graduate to Jesus through this School-led programme, which seeks to increase representation among graduate students at the University.

“I would like to express my thanks to all donors who supported this Studentship. The number of BAME students from Britain has been very small. It is very important for a successful academy within Britain to have a diverse range of people to be working on different research areas.”

Professor Patricia Daley, Helen Morag Fellow and Tutor in Geography at Jesus College was the first Black academic to be appointed to a university post at the University of Oxford in 1991.
