The John Walsh/Hamish Scott Postgraduate History Studentship
In the summer of 2023, we announced the successful endowment of an undergraduate bursary in memory of Dr John Walsh, the Dr John and Frances Walsh Undergraduate Bursary in History. The response from alumni and friends to this appeal was astonishing and very quickly we exceeded our target of raising £100k. It was decided that an appropriate use of the additional funds would be to create support for graduate historians through a spend down studentship. This additional studentship was named in memory of both Dr John Walsh and Professor Hamish Scott, former Research Fellow at College who died in 2022. Both men contributed enormously to the academic and pastoral life at College and helped to build Jesus into one of the leading colleges in Oxford for history scholarship and research.
The John Walsh/Hamish Scott Postgraduate Studentship was awarded for the first time in 2024 and was made available to a home student accepted by the University for a History MSt and covered all fees and maintenance. The recipient has since gone on to pursue a PhD and six-year fellowship at Yale University, which would not have been possible were it not for the opportunity to study for an MSt at Oxford funded so generously by alumni and friends.

“My name is Matilda Sidel and I am a recipient of the John Walsh/Hamish Scott Postgraduate History Studentship at Jesus College…The scholarship has allowed me to focus unreservedly on my studies and to seize freely the many additional opportunities available at Oxford. It has helped remove financial barriers and anxieties that can make the already challenging path of an academic career seem unattainable. It has also boosted my sense of confidence and self-sufficiency. Thank you so much!”
