50th Anniversary
of Co-Education Studentship
To mark 50 years of co-education at Jesus we launched an appeal to raise funding for an exceptional student reading for the MSt in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Thanks to the generosity of alumni from across the decades we fulfilled our target of £25k which will support a student as they look to take the required steps to doctoral level research.
The 50th Anniversary of Co-Education Studentship is a complement the undergraduate bursary, The First 100 Bursary which was fulfilled a decade ago by the collective efforts of alumni who matriculated during the first few years of co-education (1974–76). The fulfilment of both the Bursary and Studentship are remarkable achievements and a recognition of the women who have studied at Jesus since 1974 and contributions they have made to our community and environment.
The recipient of the 50th Anniversary Studentship will be welcomed in Michaelmas term 2026 and we thank all those who decided to support the appeal.
Hywel Davies, (1974, History) says: “Little did the members of the matriculation year of 1974 realise that they were part of a co-educational 'experiment' that would have far reaching implications in the history of the University. As a member of that year, I was delighted to support this innovative and interdisciplinary Masters which corresponds so well to the principles which underpinned the 'Jesus Plan.' I am sure the beneficiary of our support will enjoy the student experience, characteristic of College, as much as we did...”
The recipient of the 50th Anniversary Studentship will be welcomed in Michaelmas term 2026 and we thank all those who decided to support the appeal.

As a Tutorial Fellow, Dr John Walsh was outstanding. His courteous concern for all of his students was always paramount. Former undergraduate historians credit him with opening their minds to new ways of thinking about History and the world, and it was well known that he was a meticulous supervisor of his graduate students. Jesus College has published a booklet featuring tributes from across the College community, which you can view here.
